Start applying for seasonal work
It might seem a bit premature, but if you’re thinking of doing a bit of work over the Christmas season you could do worse than start investigating positions now. Boots, for example, has already got their Christmas 2010 application programme open. Most big supermarkets and retailers will open their Christmas recruitment in late September or early October, so keep an eye out for jobs in your area. And because the Christmas season is so busy, rates of pay are pretty good.
Use your Slivers of Time to work locally
A new government-backed website called Sliversoftime.com can match people with just a few hours to spare here and there with local work that’s just part-time. You just register with the site, get a calendar and then when you’ve got a few hours to spare coming up, put your free time on the calendar. Then these spare hours are sent to local agencies and businesses like call centres, catering companies, retail outlets and distribution centres who regularly use part-time workers.
There are more and more companies offering to pay you to refer your friends. The website Refermehappy has a load of companies that do it and we’ve got even more in our article on Referring friends.
OK, so just joining Twitter won’ t make you a millionaire – but it is a fantastic, quick paced forum for picking up little extra jobs to net you your bit on the side. For instance, we’ve just seen ‘extrapeopleltd’ asking for “a Boy George lookalike for a Mark Ronson music video, excellent rates of pay – pls call the office 020 7734 7606″. Because the Twitter world moves quickly this particular offer might not still be open, but you can bet that there are plenty more like it out there.

You could set up your own blog and sell your goods online, of course, but this is an easier route if you’re not web savvy. Plus, these sites attract a lot more customers than you would do if you set up a site on your tod. Definitely worth a look!

The job involves supervising homework and playtime, preparing tea and ferrying the children around to any after-school activities they take part in. After-school nannies have to have at least 2 years of childcare experience, but no formal qualifications or age limits apply. Earn money for yourself and for charity
Become a ‘chugger’ (charity fundraiser) and do your bit for charity whilst you earn! Several charities are looking for people to stand on the street and persuade passers-by to pay monthly amounts to their charity. You can earn between £8.50-11 an hour, on average, and the work is flexible. It involves being outside and meeting people, of course, but you could get a lot of abuse from pedestrians. Just a few of the organisations looking for fundraisers directly are Shelter, Concern and Everychild.

We know what you’re thinking… horrible burger vans at cheesy events, but actually mobile catering with MJR Tom actually involves walking around at events at all the major london stadiums and football clubs, as well as stadiums around the country and all the major british racecourses, and selling whatever it is you are told to sell. MJR Tom say that the most common product they sell is beer and the most common receptacle they use is a rucksack, so you won’t be lugging around bikes with icecream freezers on them or anything.
Once you’ve got a stock of your product you can then wander around, enjoy the event and sell your product. You are paid a minimum wage base rate and then can earn commission on top of that depending how many of your product you sell, which does give you motivation to try and sell as much as possible. Most of the events are during evenings or weekends so it’s something you can do in your spare time if you work and hopefully the events themselves should be pretty enjoyable. However carrying liquids can get pretty heavy, so it’s not a job for those who haven’t got the strength to lug around a heavy load on their back. MJR Tom are always looking to recruit new staff so why not check it out?
