1. Make sure your credit record is accurate

It’s free and it will give you a good picture of how ‘viable’ the banks think you are. Another very good reason to check it is to make sure that it has your details correctly logged. One of our Moneymagpie team checked and found that their record had an address at which they had never lived. So whoever did live at that address might have been in a position to damage their credit record.

Click on this link. It will take you through to their home page where there is a green box entitled, “30 Day Free Trial”. Click on that box which will take you through to the registration page.

Now follow these simple steps:

1. Complete the registration.
2. Note your details, including the credit file reference number.
3. Your PIN should arrive in the post in several days.
4. Use the PIN to log in online and check your credit record.
5. Inform CreditExpert of any inaccuracies.
6. Cancel your membership (so you don’t forget or get charged anything) by phoning 0800 656 9000 and selecting Option 4. You can email, but these are your bank details, so it's better to speak to someone on the record.

2. Rent out your garage or driveway (or recommend a friend)

This is as simple as it sounds. If you don’t have a car, or if you don’t use your drive during the day then you can have your drive or garage earning money for you at home while you are at work. If you don’t have either but know someone who does then you could earn £20 just for recommending them to the site.

3. Keep yourself posted on job opportunities

This one may seem fairly obvious but, in true Moneymagpie style, it is completely free and may give you some good ideas. Register with a jobs website or two such as this one and sign up for as wide a variety of occupations as you can that you might be able to fulfil.

If you want to keep your identity private then you can create a new email address on hotmail for example (this is free, of course). If they ask for a C.V. up front then upload a blank word or text document.

4. Earn cash for buying what you would have bought anyway

This one requires a bit of discipline. If you are easily tempted to spend money then skip to number 6.

There are several sites that will pay you cash back for making purchases. ONLY use this site to buy things that you would have bought anyway. It’s ideal for Christmas shopping, clothing and the like.

The site that we have chosen is one of the better ones because it makes no ‘admin’ charges and passes on all the money that it gets from the retailers.

5. Use a cashback credit card

If you're online anyway, why don't you use a cashback credit card to buy the cashback items and hey presto! You get double the cash back!

If you're going to spend, you might as well get money back for it by using a cashback credit card. American Express Platinum MoneyBack Credit Card has just announced that it it's giving 5% cashback to new customers (it was 3%) for the first three months on up to £4,000 of spending.

After that it drops down to 0.5-1.5% depending on how much you spend in a year. So that means you could make £200 if you spend the full amount in the next three months.

6. Recycle your old mobile

Instead of chucking your old mobile in the bin, sell it. And ask your friends for their old mobiles as well. It’s that simple.

7. Sell your photos online

If you have taken (or can take) some good photos then you could make a very handy bit of pocket money. The photos need to have a clear subject (e.g. a hot cup of tea or two dice) and be technically well taken. If this is within your scope then go to this photo website, sign up (for free) and upload your images.

This is not as easy as it sounds so make sure that you have a good look around the site and understand what sells and what doesn’t.
