Seven quick ways to pay off debt

1. Sell your unwanted presents
2. Rent your driveway
3. Rent your room
4. Sell your old mobile phone
5. Switch your TV/internet/phone
6. Get a free overdraft
7. Beat rising food prices

1. Sell your unwanted presents

Got a pile of pressies you didn’t want? List them on eBay or even network sites such as Facebook or Gumtree, where listings are free, and make cash out of them.  A good tip for using eBay is to sell smaller items first in order to build up your seller’s profile so that people will be happier to buy pricey items off you later on.

2. Rent your driveway

Use your home to make money  An empty driveway during the day can be used by someone else, making you money at home, whilst you are out at work.  It is free to register at this site and you can choose which days and for how long you want to make your drive available.

Register with Parkatmyhouse.com and make money from your driveway

3. Rent your room

Got a spare room? Even if you haven’t, if your debt is desperate then you should move out of yours and sleep on the sofa for a few months (yes, really) while someone else pays for your bed. You can make up to £4,250 a year tax-free from renting out a room, so do it.

4. Sell your old mobile phone

If you got a new mobile phone for Christmas, make money from your old one and help the planet at the same time. You can get around £30 for some newer phones so pick it out of your drawer and make some cash.

Send your mobile to Envirofone to make money

5. Switch all your comms to one cheap deal

New year means new deals and combining your television, broadband and phone can save you money. Sky has some great deals for the new year, with basic packages costing as little as £16 a month for phone, internet and television.  Why pay more? On their website they have a handy little calculator to help you work out exactly what your home communication needs are, helping you to choose the best package for you and saving you money.

6. Get a free overdraft

It’s the interest you pay on debts that cripples you, so as well as switching your credit cards to 0% deals, move your bank account to one that gives you a free overdraft. Alliance & Leicester Premier Direct Account offers free overdrafts up to £2,500.

Switch to Alliance & Leicester here.

7. Beat rising food prices

You can almost see food prices going up in front of your eyes at the supermarket. Save around 30% by shopping at your local market instead.  Also, cut down ‘the latte factor’ that is soaking away your hard-earned by making your own cool coffee each day. If you don’t have a thermos, you can pick one up here for less than £3.
