Seven quick ways to pay off debt

Looking for advice on ways to pay off debt? You’ve come to the right place! We’ve got seven simple debt solutions to find yourself extra money which can be put towards paying off your arrears. Be debt free with our seven quick and hassle-free ideas.

First things first, if you’re not sure where to begin with debt management, you can sign up to the free Moneymagpie Debt Action Plan Emails. You’ll receive handy hints and help straight to your inbox and we’ll have you back in the black in no time!

1. Switch and save
2. Rent out your driveway
3. Make money from your spare room
4. Make money from your old mobile
5. Get a cheap package deal
6. Make your debt interest free
7. Credit crunch munch

1. Switch and save

Help yourself out by switching all your energy suppliers – it could save you serious money and is really easy to do, honest! Use our comparison service to save yourself as much as £538 a year – we take you through the process step by step here.

Earn yourself up to £300 just for switching your current account to Santander.  Their account offers up to 3% AER and a free arranged overdraft for four months – you just need to pay in a very reasonable £500 a month to qualify.  Santander will even move all your direct debits and standing orders over from your old account – it’s completely hassle-free!

Insurance is another thing that could be costing you unnecessary money. If you’ve been with the same provider for a few years, chances are you’re missing out on the best deals – they are usually only offered to new customers. So remember, loyalty doesn’t always pay! Do a quick comparison to make sure you’re getting the best deal on all your insurance policies.

2. Rent out your driveway

An empty driveway during the day can be used by someone else, making you money at home whilst you’re out at work. This is especially lucrative if you live in a commuter area – near a train station or airport for instance, or just outside a congestion charging zone.

It’s free to register on Parkatmyhouse.com and you can choose which days and for how long you want to make your drive available. Register here to get started, and find out more about how it works here.

3. Make money from your spare room

Got a spare room? Even if you haven’t, if your debt is desperate then you should move out of yours and sleep on the sofa for a few months (yes, really) while someone else pays for your bed. You can make up to £4,250 a year tax free from renting out a room, so do it.

Get started with spareroom.co.uk where you can place an advert for free. The site has over one million users so you’re bound to find someone who wants your room!

If you just want someone during the week, try the website MondaytoFriday which specialises in finding rooms for business people who need somewhere closer to work for the week, but go home at the weekends.

Find out more about the ins and outs of renting out a room here.

4. Make money from your old mobile

This is one of the easiest ways to pay off debt – at least a bit of it.  If you’ve got an old mobile phone (or two) knocking about somewhere at home then dig it out and recycle it. Not only will you be helping the planet, you’ll make yourself some cash too.

As a general rule, the newer the phone the more money you’ll get – an iPhone can make you more than £200! Our comparison service will tell you which of the many recycling companies offers the most for your mobile – try it below.

5. Get a cheap package deal

Combining your television, broadband and phone can save you big money. Obviously if you’re trying to cut back you don’t want to spending loads extra on sports and film channels, but some of the more basic packages are often really good value.

Sky has some great deals at the moment. Right now you can get 2GB broadband, Sky TV with an entertainment pack and free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines all for less than £25 a month. You get your Sky+ box for free (with no set-up charges) and on top of that, buying it online will also entitle you to £25 of M&S vouchers. Sign up here.

If you’re not sure what kind of package you need and want to compare prices, use our fab comparison service. It’s really easy to use and has been accredited by Ofcom – so you know it’s good!

6. Make your debt interest free

It’s the interest you pay on debts that cripples you, but there is something you can do to ease the pain. Try to move your debts onto a 0% balance transfers credit card like the Barclaycard Platinum Credit Card (22 months interest-free balance transfers).

If you want to know more about 0% balance transfer cards, head to our article here.

7. Credit crunch munch

No debt management plan is complete without this classic.  Taking your lunch to work instead of buying it each day will literally save you thousands of pounds a year. And it’s easier than you think. For loads of great, cheap recipe ideas check out Sarah Lockett’s food blog.

Pick up some Lock and Lock containers from Lakeland. They come in loads of different sizes and will store just about anything without leaking. These fab little things are freezer,  microwave and dishwasher safe.

While you’re at it why not cut down on your coffee spend too? Save even more cash by bringing your caffeine fix with you – get this Thermos travel mug from Amazon for £4 and you’ll be ready to go.

We’ve got more tips on lunchtime savings here, as well as a guide on to save on supermarket shopping.

I also had a bad experience with Alliance and Leicester. I tried to pay money IN to clear an overdraft, and because i didn’t have the account details with me, they refused point blank to look me up on the system and accept the money. They then set a credit collection agency onto me and it cost me over £300…. I will never EVER bank with them again.

  6. tina says:

A&L i wish i’d never swopped they rip me off BIG TIME £8.00 payment (just over overdraft limit) cost £25.00 total £33.00 then another payment of £15.00 £25.00 for the same day wages went in last after there charges £73.00 off wages no joke in a month they have charged me £250 weekly wage gone in charges. tried for extened overdraft told no REASON THEY WANT OR MONEY FOR THERE BONUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Debby Lea says:

Yes totally agree re Alliance & Leicester! Worst move we ever made they are so shocking and have caused so many problems for us that it would take me a whole book to list the nightmare!
Lets just say DONT if you are considering moving your account to them – once we sort out the mess we are now in we will move back to our old bank.
P.S Do not be fooled by the match your overdraft promise. You send in original statements as proof but they loose them and make a total hash of the admin then tell you that you only send in copies?!

It is important that we understand the difference between a asset and a liability and how the numbers work.
