I don’t usually advocate new-fangled technologies just because there’s a big buzz about them but, seriously, I am hugely impressed by the role of Twitter in the Iran elections right now. 

I Tweet regularly now (follow me at @Jasmine for money-making and saving ideas) and I keep looking at the list of tweets about those elections. It’s amazing, and very impressive, to see how many people are commenting – particularly Iranians dealing with the situation minute-by-minute.

It really says something that the Mullahs are trying to ban Twitter, Facebook and other social media. They can keep trying, though, but they can’t hide the facts anymore. They’re trying, China’s trying and other totalitarian states are trying to hold back the tide but they won’t manage it in the end. 

Things have been far worse in Iran than we have heard. Journalist friends of mine who work out there say that ordinary people hate the Mullahs – so much so that they used to support George Bush!! Years ago the Iranian people would do what they liked in the streets and pray at home. Now, because of the oppressive ‘religious’ regime they only pray in the streets but do what they really like at home.

The situation had to explode at some point – information technology and social media have just helped the process and we should keep helping it along!
