Why does a McDonald’s meal cost more in Newcastle than anywhere else in the UK?

August 2, 2012

This, and many other vital questions, are asked in a documentary I’m in tonight on ITV’s Tonight programme.

It’s all about the postcode lottery we live in. And it’s weird what’s included. You can pay more for your electricity than someone who lives 20 minutes away and, yes, if you’re in Newcastle, for some reason, your McDonald’s meal is going to be more expensive even than the ones sold in London. Go figure!

Check out some of the odd variations in prices and living standards across the UK

Transport

  • Rail commuters face very different costs. Those travelling 10-19 miles into London can expect to pay £2,527 a year for a season ticket, nearly one and a half times the cost of £1,053 for those travelling into Cardiff
  • Affordability is highest in Cardiff, where commuters on median earnings need to work for 2.3 weeks to pay for their annual ticket; in contrast, workers in Bristol need to work for 4 weeks

Eating out

  • McDonald’s meals cost more in Newcastle than anywhere else; a Big Mac and coke costs £4.08, 8% higher than in London, Torbay and Swansea (£3.78)
  • A large sausage roll in Greggs costs 28% more in Norwich, London and Tunbridge Wells (87p) than in all other regions (68p)
  • A Domino’s cheese and tomato pizza costs one-third more to deliver in Northampton (£13.50) than in  Newcastle (£9.99)
  • Food and drink in Wetherspoon pubs are generally more expensive in London: with a glass of Pinot Grigio costing £5.40 here, compared with just £3.55 in Torbay

Leisure

  • A family ticket at the Odeon cinema cost £42 in London, one and a half times the £17.60 paid in Hull
  • Monthly membership of Virgin Active cost £110 in London, compared with just £39.95 in Hull – a difference of 175%
  • Hotel rooms also differ in price, with a double at the Premier Inn costing £119 in London, compared with £61 in Northampton

So to find out what’s happening here and why, watch the Tonight programme on ITV tonight.
