Hi, we are the family who saved money with Jasmine on our weekly shopping bill. On the programme we saved about £35. Since then I have tried to continue with Jasmine's advice although we have given up on the thighs and legs of meat instead of breast meat. We found that they didn't taste as good and ended up in the dogs bowl which was a total waste.
I found checking the price of meat per Kg was a good way of finding out which were the best value for money. Since the summer ,times have become even harder and we can no longer afford to buy our organic meat as much. I have found that Tesco do pork shoulders for as little as £2.89 per Kg and have bought big peices for around £10 which I chop up and freeze . This usually does us 4 dinners.
Also it is often cheaper to buy a whole chicken than chicken breasts.
I have found my shopping bill creaping back up when I don't do a shopping list first. This can take time but I can get my weekly shop down to £70 , including nappies , if I do this.
Since the show people have given my money saving tips, mostly from the older generation who were taught these things by their parents. My mother in law told me to freeze my fresh veg , as I kept throwing it away as it went off before I used it. I have tried it and it tasted fine.Ruth on This morning, told me to use up my browning bananas in banana bread. (Jessica had fun making this, although she didn't like it ).
I have nearly finished my christmas shopping now and have done it on a tight budget. My tip is to talk to the people who you buy for and agree to only buy for the kids or take the kids to the cinema or a day out instead. I have done this with all myfriends this year as we are all in teh same boat. With the kids friends from school instead of buying expensive xmas presnts get your kids to make them things, or have a play day instead. My whole family are receiving homemade book marks from the girls this year. They had loads of fun making them too.
I will try and think of some more as I have lots and post them later. Just remember if times are hard you are not the only one. Chin up and keep going , it will get better x
