Question     Selling Homemade Cakes
Dotted Line

I've just watched the Wright Stuff and Jasmine mentioned selling home made cakes etc at car boot sales as a way of making money.  I'm about to be made redundant and am looking for a way to generate a bit of income.  I'm a qualified cake decorator and had thought of setting up a business from home, but am a bit worried about the Health and Safety side of things.

Do you have to have health and safety certs etc to sell food at a boot sale? At what point do you need to get h&S registered in order to sell home made goods?

Thanks!

I don't know about boot sales, but why not join some local WI markets? They help out with information about hygiene requirements and you are likely to get better prices than at boot sales. They help you to price realistically, and you can buy packaging at bulk prices through the market.  Once you have sold a few times, you tend to get repeat orders as well, which is useful.

I used to do this, though not for some years now.

there are also a lot of town councils that have christmas markets at weekends and very often you see stands with home baking etc. Car Boot sales would be good but tend to quieten down in winter.Maybe you could 'bake to order ' for local coffee shops. Not all of them do their own baking.

Womens Institute markets, held in most towns, sometimes called country markets now. Just google it. You don't have to belong to a womens institute group, or even be  a woman to join!

I'm not 100% certain but I suspect it must be women's institute markets.

Women's Institute markets were known as country markets but they're totally independant of each other now. We'll have an article up on making cakes and jams to sell soon - so watch this space! Sign up for the newsletter so you know when all the latest articles are up. If anyone already sells cakes or jams to make money then get in touch - we'd love to hear from you!
