What do you do for New Year’s Eve? Do you have any particular traditions?

Maybe you have friends round and see the New Year in with a nice dinner and games.

Or maybe it’s round the TV with Jools Holland?

You might be surprised to know that in Germany, for the last 20 years or so, the New Year tradition has been to watch an English comedy sketch, in English, that was written in the 1920′s.

This version, filmed in the 1960′s, starting Freddie Frinton and May Warden, is the one they watch. They love it.

It turns out it’s a New Year tradition in Estonia, Finland and various other northern European countries. Who knew? I certainly didn’t. I haven’t seen this sketch before and I don’t know the actors.

    This is an NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk, North German Broadcasting Service) recording made in Hamburg. The sketch is on TV every year for over 50 years now and we love it.

    “Dinner for One” is most of the time followed by a german sketch about a “Silvesterpunsch” (all about preparing a New Year’s Eve party) from the 1970′s.
    For Germans this absolutely has become a tradition and we really appreciate that our neighbours like it too. There is still hope, that it will become more popular in England.

    “Same procedure as last year, Ms. Sophie?”
    “Same procedure as every year, James!”
    “Oh, well…”
