Messageboards: Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Got a question about using the boards? Check these Frequently Answered Questions for the answer. Also read our general board guidelines and check you're aware of the site's Terms and Conditions.

Registering and logging in

Why do I need to register?
You need to register to post a comment on a messageboard or a blog. It’s to help prevent spam – lots of rubbish posts – clogging up the boards. It also makes it easier for you to see posts that you have read. It costs nothing and we promise to keep your information safe (opens in new window).

How do I register?
Just click here and enter your email address, a username and a password of your choice. You’ll be sent an email, which has a link that you need to click to verify your address. This is so we can be sure that you wanted to sign up.

Do I have to pay?
No way. Registration is free.

Where’s my verification email? I didn’t get it.
Have you checked your junk mail folder? It’s probably ended up in there – particularly if you use a Hotmail, AOL or Yahoo! account. If you’re still having trouble, email us here and we’ll look into it.

I can’t remember if I’ve registered. How do I check?
Just try to log in - you’ll be told if the email addres entered is not registered.

Okay, done the registration bit – now how do I log in?
Just click the login button on the messageboard page (this also appears if you try to post a comment without having logged in). You need to enter the email address you logged in with and your password.

I’ve forgotten my password. Can I get a reminder?
Sure. Just click the password reminder link on the login page.

Can I change my username?
Nope. You need to pick one and stick with it. This is so people know which poster they’re dealing with.

Posting

Can I put a photo in my post?
Yes. It can’t be too big or it won’t display properly. Remember not to post something you don’t have the right to use – it should be a picture that you have taken.

Can I go back and edit my posts?
Yes – make sure you’re logged in and hit the edit button that will appear at the bottom of the post.

Can I advertise my business/website?
No. This is a place for discussion, not advertising. Spam and adverts will be removed. If you’re recommending a product, website, or anything else that you’re involved in, please say so.

What links can I include?

You can only include direct links to websites if they are necessary. Any affiliate links will be removed.

That post’s racist/libellous/sexually explicit! Why is it allowed?
It’s not. But posts are not monitored – we rely on Moneymagpie members to shout about things that offend them. Click the Report this post button to alert the moderators. The post will then be reviewed as soon as possible and – if appropriate – removed.

Will Moneymagpie delete posts?
Yes – if they’re racist, libellous, offensive, spam, adverts, sexually explicit or otherwise evil. Please note – posts are not monitored and we will review them after we have been alerted to them.

I want to start a new discussion. How do I start a new thread?
Look over the existing threads to check that there isn’t already a discussion on your topic. If there isn’t, then just click…
I found this really great article on the web. Can I copy it and post it for everyone else to see?
No. Don’t post more than a short extract – a sentence or so – and be sure to say where it’s from. However, you are welcome to put a link to the article in your post.

Why don’t you have a messageboard for people to talk about savings accounts/surviving as a single parent/Star Wars?
Ideas for new boards are always welcome, so if you want something else, suggest it using the Suggest new board button at the top left of the messageboards page. It may be that also be that the topic falls into one of the categories that we do have – browse around the existing boards to check.

Can I post the same thing lots of times in lots of different places?
No. Multiple posts will be deleted. Pick the thread that seems most appropriate to what you want to say, then stick with it. Try to keep things relevant.

This is such a great post! Can I give the poster a big hug and tell the world all about it?
Hit the Recommend this post button. Everyone will be able to see that the post has been recommended, which makes them more likely to see it. It’s the online equivalent of giving the poster a pat on the back.

A poster disagreed with me. Is that allowed?
Disagreement is all part of discussion. It would be boring if we all thought exactly the same. Remember that not everyone will have the same ideas and experience as you. Sharing them can make things richer – but keep things polite and friendly.

General

Take me back to the beginning. What’s a messageboard?
A messageboard – or just plain old board for short – is a place where you can come and ask questions and dish up your opinions on money matters or just about anything else you could do with a hand with. Anyone can read the messages – or posts – and members who are logged in can contribute to the discussion.

What’s a moderator?
The moderator looks after the forums and keeps things running smoothly from day to day. They can remove posts, monitor reports of abuse, lock topics or move posts to a different thread if they’re in the wrong place.

What’s a signature?
It’s a short message that comes up under your posts. You can change it any time. Keep it short – long signatures take up space that could be filled with new posts.
