How to make MORE money in the Midlands

The Midlands is a diverse and vibrant part of the UK which is home to roughly 4.5 million people, a rich history and a bright future.

The region is packed full of towns and cities which have their own unique identities and stories to tell which makes the area a fantastic place to live or visit.

In recent years, the heart of Birmingham alone has seen dramatic transformation as Grand Central Station has had an incredible refurbishment and buildings such as the Library of Birmingham, voted Britain’s favorite new building, have opened their doors to thousands.

Furthermore, High Speed Rail 2 will run through the region, reducing journey times from Birmingham to London from 1 hour 21 minutes, to 49 minutes, something which will help continue the improvements across the area.

But what about the opportunities available right now in the Midlands? It’s all well and good to talk about the long term and major infrastructure future, but what if you’re a Brummy just looking for ways to make a little bit of extra money?

To help you figure that out, we’ve done some research to find out how to make the most of specific opportunities in the Midlands.

Christmas Market work

Christmas Market midlands

Across the Midlands, Christmas markets will begin popping up in the lead up to the festive season.

From Leicester to Nottingham and Birmingham to Wolverhampton, there will be pop up markets serving food, drink and all kinds of Christmas paraphernalia.

As a result, there will be a much higher number of temporary jobs available for people who have a little bit of spare time over the holidays.

The hourly rate is generally much higher for service workers over Christmas so if you are a student or have a job which will not need you over the festive weeks, make sure to check out the opportunities available.

There are also a huge number of retailers in the Bullring offering temporary Christmas jobs which you can apply for here

Work to organise the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

It was announced earlier this year, that Birmingham would be the host of the next commonwealth games, which will provide a huge boost to the local economy.

Even though the games are four years away, there are already jobs and opportunities to capitalise upon if you want to be a part of organising the event.

The Manchester Commonwealth games was transformative for the city while the London 2012 Olympics delivered one of the greatest sporting events the world has ever seen.

Over 1,000 people will be recruited in Birmingham in order to manage the event so make sure to get involved if you want to earn money while being part of a historic project for the region.

Become a Christmas Driver

Everybody knows how much of a nightmare it can be to book a table for a meal or get transport arranged during the Christmas break as the demand is so high.

However, when the demand is high and supply is short, there is opportunity to be had.

If you have some spare time on your hands or you need to generate some extra cash, you can always join Uber and become a driver for a few times during the week.

However, if you don’t fancy taking your chances with whoever orders a taxi, you could always offer friends and family to be the designated driver for Christmas parties and staff nights out as there are so many parties over the holidays.

Capitalise on Awards season

midlands awards

Throughout the UK and across many major industries, award ceremonies take place during the winter months as corporate businesses host clients, friends and journalists in order to celebrate their past year and give out awards to industry leaders who are judged to have been the best in class.

The Midlands has a huge number of venues which host such events and due to the fact that the region is in the middle of the country, a large number of businesses prefer to host their events in the area as opposed to London.

This is so that people from the north of the county and Scotland, don’t have as far to travel to attend and are therefore, more likely to buy tickets.

You can make some real money if you’re smart in awards season by calling around the major venues in the area and finding out when their major events are on, once you know the key dates, you can plan to be a driver for the night, offer photography services to the hosting business or even offer to work behind the bar for the evening.
