5 Ways to Cope When You’re Constantly Travelling For Work

Being away from home all the time for business can be extremely taxing. You miss your family and friends and the comfort of your own home. Spending weeks away at a time in strange cities or even different countries will exhaust you physically and mentally if you don’t take care of yourself. 

When your work is very demanding in this sense, it’s important that you’re prepared for the extensive travel and manage it as best you can – here are some tips.  

Make Yourself Comfortable

Feeling uncomfortable and unfamiliar in your space will only make things more difficult, which is why you must make yourself as comfortable as possible with your surroundings.  

A good way to do this is to rent your own apartment for longer trips. You can look up monthly short term rentals, Toronto or any area where you spend a lot of time working. By using accommodation like this instead of a hotel, you’ll be able to settle down a little more, cook your own meals, and even have friends over for a dinner or relax in the ways you enjoy.  


Research Your Destination

When travelling to a new country or city, it’s always best to research your destination ahead of time so you have a better idea of what to expect. Make sure you know a little bit about the customs and languages spoken there, and that you know exactly where you’ll be working and what you’ll be doing. 

You might also research some fun tourist activities you could get involved in during your free time, and pick out a few nice restaurants to visit during lunch meetings that will allow you to sample the local cuisine.  


Take Care of Yourself

Usually, when we travel, our normal routines, exercises, and healthy diets go out the window. While this is fine for a holiday, it’s not a good idea to adopt such a carefree attitude on a work trip. 

Keeping up with a good sleep schedule, healthy diet and regular exercise will play an important role in keeping your sharp and productive while you work. You could even try a meat-free month while you travel to save money on food and keep yourself energised.  


Don’t OverBook Yourself

Of course, a business trip is about productivity and you’ll want to maximise how much you get done while you’re there. However, balance is still important and you should be careful not to overbook your schedule.  

If there are more meetings and other tasks to do than what can comfortably fit into the schedule of your trip, discuss the possibility of extending your stay rather than cramming them all into a few short days. 


Make Time For Fun and Rest

Finally, remember that you can definitely schedule some fun into your trip. We all need to clock out sometime, and this rule applies when you’re on a business trip too. 

Plan some lunch breaks in areas you’d like to explore, meet friends or family in the area for dinner after hours or even consider extending your trip by a day or two to explore a little.
