Important Things To Consider When Moving House

Reading Time: 6 mins

Moving house is a big transition in life whether it’s getting your first home or moving to a bigger house as your family grows. It can be such a stressful part of life as there is so much that needs to be done and sometimes in such a short time period. So here are some handy things you need to make sure you consider when moving home to make it as stress-free and organised as possible. This will cover all different areas of moving home as there is so much more to it than just picking up your things and putting them somewhere new.

Colour Coordinate For Ease

When moving house you can end up with a lot of boxes and it can sometimes be hard to differentiate what goes where and what is inside it. A great way to be more organised in this instance is to colour coordinate. So you would assign a colour to a certain room. Then you could look to use coloured markers, paint a stripe of the colour on the box or if you can find it you could even get coloured boxes. This would also make things a lot easier when putting the boxes in the new house too as you can make sure all the colours go into the right rooms and will help if you hire a moving company to do it for you.

Settling All Your Bills

When moving house make sure you inform all of your providers like tv, electric and gas. But also make sure you give them a set date you are moving out. Then the companies can calculate how much you need to pay until you leave on that day. It also will prevent any unnecessary charges if there is an interim period from when you move out but the new people move in.

Make Sure You Tell Everyone

When moving home it is quite surprising how many things you need to change. You need to update everything related to your medical needs like doctors, insurance and any deliveries for medications. You will also need to tell all of your bill providers like utilities, tv and tax. But a lot of people forget who else they need to tell, like the bank, work, schools and any monthly subscriptions they have like a food or beauty delivery service. Sometimes letters still come through or there’s bound to be someone that you forgot to tell so having a post redirection at your local post office is a great way to sort this out. So if any post goes to the old address it will simply be redirected to your new address and you wait this out and then you can update that person who sent you a letter.

Have You Got Your Home Warranty

Home warranty is different to normal homeowner cover but is just as important. It will help protect you if you ever need any breakdown cover. It is there to help reduce the costs to repair and replace items in your home like appliances or any systems you may have. It will help give you peace of mind especially on moving days as there is so much going on, so many people going in and out of your house and moving things all around. It is great for the unexpected as sometimes things just break for no reason out of the blue and it normally comes at a time where you are short on cash so this will help keep costs down.

Have A Clear Out Beforehand

When you move house, you are literally taking all of your belongings with you to a new place. Over time we collect a lot of stuff and store a lot of stuff. As moving house is expensive and stressful enough you don’t want to be taking things and spending time and energy packing them when it is something you don’t really need or want. So before you start packing, have a big clear out and get rid of anything you no longer want, use or that doesn’t fit anymore. You can give them to a friend, give them to charity or just bin them if they are no good. The obvious and best places to start are clothes, shoes and books.

Organise Any Changes Your Kids Might Face

When moving to a new area your kids will need to move schools if they’re in a different catchment. It can be quite daunting and can give your children anxiety at the thought of moving to a new school. So before you’re moving be sure to take time out to show your children the area and also show them around the school so they know what to expect. You never know, they may make a friend while they’re there. Try to save any extracurricular clubs or activities they take part in it. Maybe they need to apply to be in the one in the new school or you may just need to move clubs if they no longer offer it to the area that you’re moving to.

Start Packing Your Belongings Early

You would want to do most of your packing around two weeks in advance but you can start packing before that. There are certain things that you won’t need to use on a daily basis which you can prepare and get ready in order to move. This could be things like holiday clothes, holiday decorations and you can even start packing pots and pans that you don’t use on a regular basis. Another thing that you need to consider when moving house is how you’re going to move the things in the kitchen so that you will be packing up all your food in a safe way to make sure that they are not damaged or ruined. And the day before or on the day you want to sort out moving all the things out of your fridge and freezer and defrosting and drying them out so they can be transported in a safe and efficient way. And when you’re packing don’t forget the areas that you are going to the house very often like your garage or your attic as you still have belongings in there you don’t want to leave behind.

Make Moving Day Run With Ease

On the day of the move it will be very stressful so looking to make it a stress-free as possible is something everyone needs to be doing. Having kids and pets around is not ideal with so many people walking about heavy boxes, it’s an accident waiting to happen. So see if you can leave the kids with the grandparents or family member and see if you can put your pet in doggy daycare or again see if a family member can look after them. A busy day can also take up such a chunk of the time that you may forget to eat. However, with all the moving and things you will be doing you have to keep your energy levels high and stay full for longer so you can do everything you need to do. The day before the moving day you could do something or you could make a packed lunch to take with you.

Prepare For Unexpected Costs

Moving house can be very expensive. There are lots of different people you need to pay for, services you need to pay for like lawyers, moving companies and property surveys to check the condition of the property. There may also be things that crop up so before planning to move try to save up money as much as you can for moving and emergencies. You will want to curb any impulsive purchases and spending before moving as well. Especially if you are moving out for the first time as sometimes it can be a bit of a shock as to how much it is to live on your own with bills, insurance and food to pay for.

Important Things To Do For Moving Day

Moving day can be such a whirlwind but here are a few things to make sure you do. Take one last walk around the house to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Pack a night bag for your first night in the new house so you have pyjamas, toothbrush, medicine and towels so you aren’t rooted around boxes after a busy day. Put together a mini toolkit to pack too so that when you get to the new house you have a sharp knife to open the boxes and things that can help you assemble any furniture that you may have to dismantle for the move. Make sure you have the keys to your new house as well as collect all of your old ones to return. Don’t forget any spare keys you might have given to family members or neighbours. Make sure you have charged your phone and it’s full for the day ahead. All these little things will help take away any extra stresses you might face.
