Cheaper car insurance is something any driver is keen to get hold of. One way to cut your car insurance costs is to prove that you’re an excellent driver by doing an advanced driving course. Here are a few you could take.
- IAM Test – £139 Skill for Life course
- RoSPA Advanced test – Offer free advice and and assessments through their local groups – test is £48 or £41 for those under 26 years of age plus a £20 annual membership. Membership offers benefits and discounts off of some motoring goods and services. Tests must be re-taken every three years.
- DIAmond Advanced Test – £72 for a one-hour test
- RAC Advanced Course – £27 per lesson, with several hours practice necessary. This is run through BSM
Improving your driving skills this way might not bring down what you’re currently paying, but it’ll make you a better driver and therefore statistically less likely to make a claim.
If you’re looking to directly reduce your bill, you might want to consider taking the Pass Plus test, which could see you save 5% with some insurers.
While it’s targeted at those who have passed their test in the last 12 months, anyone can take it. It’s worth checking with your insurance company if they give the discount, although we know that Aviva and Churchill do take this into account.
The course has six modules testing your driving skills in different conditions and you’re continuously assessed. You’re expected to do at least five and half hours behind the wheel before receiving the certificate which enables you to get your discount.
