Being a leader is challenging, but it’s also rewarding. Becoming a leader takes time and commitment, and you’ll have to use your time wisely. By focusing on strategies that work, you can hone your leadership skills and make the most of your limited time. Here are some investments that will improve your productivity as a leader.
Create Clear Expectations
As a leader, you must set clear expectations for everyone on your team. The best way to go about this is to set the expectations on a specific time frame. For example, weekly, monthly or quarterly expectations give each team member a goal and productivity plan.
Get the Rest You Need
When you have a full plate, it’s easy to take on more responsibility than you need to. As a leader your job is to have a clear mind to make the hard decisions that change the course of a company. Find time to take a nap if you need during your workday. Also, finding the right mattress can immediately improve sleep and lower stress.
Invest in Great Tools
Choose some useful tools for work. A CRM or Trello Board is a good option. They provide infrastructure that you can use at any time. They make it easy to store and retrieve information. Anybody on your team can use it in order to find an answer to their question. They reduce paper clutter and increase tidiness in the workplace.
Avoid Long Meetings
Long meetings are rarely worth the amount of time that they require. If an issue can’t be resolved in one hour or less, conclude the meeting and move on with your day. Schedule a shorter, 15- 30-minute meeting to wrap up any issues. In almost all cases, 15 to 20 minutes should be enough time to discuss a problem or concern, formulate a solution and create an action plan for it.
Know Your Team
Know the personalities of everyone who reports to you. Pay attention to each person’s passions and strengths. When you need to delegate a task, you will know the best person for it. Find out each person’s learning style and preferred work style or environment. When a new project comes up, you’ll know who to put on the team for it.
You need feedback from each of your reports on a regular basis. Dedicate some time for this. A weekly one-on-one meeting with each person who reports to you allows you to give and receive feedback. If something’s not working, you’ll find out sooner rather than later. Share any concerns or solutions that you’ve been deliberating.
Be the Boss of Your Time
As a leader, everyone will make demands of your time. This could leave you with little time to work on your own development or projects. Create a calendar and stick to it. When you need time to work on your own project, block it out on your calendar. Your team will know that your time is committed. Create a few blocks of this time for yourself during every work week.
When you have information, give it to others. Remember that there are no stupid questions. If a member of your team asks you a question, and you have helpful information, give it to them. Avoid keeping useful information to yourself. Consider maintaining an internal file or place where your staff can go for this information.
