Moving: How to Pack for an Efficient Move

Reading Time: 3 mins

Packing is one of the most dreaded parts of planning a move, and you can quickly get overwhelmed just by looking at everything that needs to be put into boxes. There’s no escaping the fact it has to be done, but there are ways to make it easier. Learning how to pack efficiently helps you get through the moving process with your sanity and favorite belongings intact.

Make a Checklist to Follow

Moving requires so many decisions that it is easy to lose track of what you’re doing. Making several lists helps you to avoid overlooking something that is essential. You’ll first want to make a general list of everything you need to accomplish such as contacting utility companies. It’s also helpful to make a list of packing supplies to buy such as boxes, tape and markers. If you own a lot of valuables, then creating a list of them helps you to plan for specialty packing materials and storage during the move.

Eliminate Unnecessary Belongings

It’s highly likely that you don’t have to pack everything. Most people accumulate some stuff over the years that they no longer need. Sort through your old clothing, and consider giving away or donating anything that you haven’t worn in a long time. You can do the same thing with children’s toys, unused small appliances and decorative items that no longer fit your style. Decluttering will help you to feel less stressed, and you’ll have a better idea of what you actually need to pack.

Utilise a Colour Coded Packing System

Labeling boxes with their contents is always a smart move, but you can take this a step further by using colored packing tape or markers to signify where each box goes. This helps the movers get the boxes to the correct rooms at the new location. You’ll also be able to tell with a quick glance what a box might contain if you have to get into it during the packing process.

Know How to Store Your Essential Furniture Pieces

Many moves require you to store some of your belongings temporarily. For example, you might be moving out of your home while you wait to repair water damage, or you may need to take out bulky furniture from the guest room to stage your home for a sale. Knowing how to store a mattress or couch so that it’s in good condition when you are ready to collect it is vital. Once you’ve learned what to do, you can take similar steps to prepare your items for the final part of your move.

Use Household Materials for Cushioning

Protecting your belongings from breakage is a big part of packing efficiently. However, you may not need to stock up on huge amounts of bubble wrap. Instead, use bath towels, sheets and other soft items to cushion breakables. You’ll cut down on how many boxes you have to move and stay within your moving budget better.

Develop a Routine and Stick to It

It’s easy to put off packing when you have so many other responsibilities to manage. However, skipping even a day of packing can lead to a rushed move where you get tempted to throw everything into boxes. Try to carve out an hour or two each day to pack. You may be able to do even more on your days off work. Doing this helps you to turn packing into a normal part of your daily routine. If you feel like continuing after your planned time is up, then take a quick break and keep going. Maintaining momentum is often easy once you get yourself motivated to start.

As you pack, remember to continue to practice self-care. You might be tempted to rush through and stay up all night packing, but you need adequate rest to be ready for the next day. Try to take things slow and easy, so that you’ll feel your best when your moving day arrives.
