Turning 60 is a big a life milestone but also a great opportunity to reflect on your priorities and recognise the changes that have occurred over the years. This can be seen as a new chapter to ensure your financial future is secure and as stress-free as possible.

Personal admin doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By addressing the areas that you may have been overlooking, you can alleviate unnecessary stress, take control of your own future and enhance your overall wellbeing.

Here’s our checklist we’ve produced to ensure you stay ahead of the game:

  1. Stay on top of your health
  2. Review your finances
  3. Keep up with your admin
  4. Plan for the future
  5. Focus on what’s important to you

1. Stay on top of your health

Your health is something you need to make sure you are prioritising. Having annual health check-ups (full body MOTs) which include your hearing, eyesight, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and mentioning any changes you’ve experienced in your body can help to catch potential issues early, as well as offer you peace of mind.

If applicable, creating a list of what medications, allergies and emergency contacts can be useful to those around you should you ever need help.

    2. Review your finances

Taking time to review and update your current financial arrangements can provide you with a great sense of security.

You could start by evaluating your pension plan, creating a budget and checking if your savings are aligned with your retirement goals.

You may also want to take into consideration if there’s room in your budget for any unexpected changes that may occur in the future and create a savings pot.

You could consult with a reputable financial advisor if you need additional assistance.

    3. Keep up with your admin

Something we all choose to push aside or ‘tackle it when Monday comes’, is to check that all your insurance policies are up to date, as well as your legal Will (is it still following your current wishes?) Checking periodically and accounting for any changes that may occur can relieve pressures off family members in the future.

Streamlining your daily routine can significantly boost your productivity. One effective way to achieve this is by reviewing old documents and throwing away any unnecessary/outdated paperwork.

Take the time to work through your files, deciding which items are outdated. By getting rid of these documents, you not only create a more organised space in your home but also reduce the ‘mental’ clutter.

Consider digitising important files to keep everything in one convenient location, you can do this via your phone. Embracing a more organised approach can lead to a clearer mind, ultimately enhancing your overall wellbeing.

    4. Plan for the future

Taking out a life insurance policy at any age can seem like a morbid decision, in fact it’s practical to consider your funeral and putting protection in place to relieve your loved ones of this financial obligation. An over 60 life insurance policy provides a cash lump sum that can be used to cover expenses such as rising funeral costs or to provide an inheritance.

It’s essential to consider a few key points:

    •  Is your current coverage adequate for your situation?
    • Are you holding the appropriate type of policy? With various options available to meet different needs, it’s crucial to find the right fit.

For example, a guaranteed over 50s policy is a popular/affordable option amongst the over 60s demographic as acceptance is guaranteed, as is a future payout, plus no medical questions are asked during the application process. In contrast, if you are in good health, you could consider a whole of life insurance policy, which also guarantees a payout after you pass away, however compared to a guaranteed over 50s policy the potential cover amount is much greater (up to £1,000,000 vs £20,000). However, with whole of life policies you’ll be asked health questions during the application.

If you haven’t yet secured the necessary policies, remember that it’s always a good time to start.

    5. Focus on what’s important to you

Now you have successfully navigated through the tasks that once seemed daunting, you can enjoy what matters. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in your passions, spending time with those loved ones around you and making valuable memories.

Additionally, don’t overlook the importance of focusing on your own interests; set aside time for both new and old hobbies. You can’t put a price on a fulfilled, stress-free future.

We hope the above over 60s admin checklist has been helpful. If we have identified something which you have previously overlooked why not seize today and implement the necessary changes.
