What giveaways should you use if you’re exhibiting at an event?

There are multiple different tactics that you can use to make your mark on attendees at trade shows and exhibitions. Coming up with a strategy on how you can inspire people in a memorable manner can be a lot of fun, and it definitely requires a creative touch.

A popular option is to use some kind of branded giveaway. That being said, it’s gotten so popular that you have to work hard to make sure you leave your mark. From focusing on your target audience to being a little different, here’s how you should approach giveaways at your next event.

Who is your target audience?

Which giveaways are effective or not will depend massively on who your target audience is. For example, in some contexts a well-made tote bag might actually end up a semi-permanent fixture in the kitchen, constantly ready for the next grocery shopping trip. In others, it could be left on the train back home.

If you’re going to be attending a trade show, you’ll need to do your market research to understand your target audience anyway. You’ll be using services like Focal Exhibitions to customise your trade stand anyway, so spending a few more minutes considering what giveaways might suit that audience is well worth the effort.

Think practical

The best giveaways are typically small, useful items that people will need to buy at some point anyway. That could be a good pen, a small notebook, some sticky notes, or a nice, reusable water bottle. Based on your understanding of your target audience, you can determine which items that fit into this bracket will be the most relevant and useful.

Stay sustainable

Giveaways often toe the line between inspired marketing and wasteful frivolousness. Given how important sustainability is in the current cultural context, it’s important that you don’t end up on the wrong side of that line.

Giving away poorly made, unsustainable merchandise can end up being more than just a waste of money. It can reflect poorly on your business on a deeper level, leading potential customers to believe that you don’t take sustainability efforts seriously. If this is their only real contact with your business, you have to make sure that it comes close to matching the values you wish to promote.

Be different

Lastly, you really do need to make sure that what you’re giving away stands out from all the other freebies that people will go home with from the event. Whatever you give out needs to be engaging and memorable enough that it doesn’t get thrown in the first bin the recipient sees.

Whether that’s embracing a catchy aesthetic or choosing a piece of high-quality clothing that your target audience is actually likely to wear, you need to treat your giveaways seriously. Besides, if every single stand is giving out pens at the same event, no matter how nice your one is, the chances it gets chosen can be pretty low.

Make sure that you treat your giveaways with the respect that they deserve. Take the time to get it right, so that you can maximise their potential effects at the next event you attend.
