Why You Should Quit the Job Hunt and Start a Business

Reading Time: 5 mins

Even though the Great Resignation is happening right now for many workers around the world, it doesn’t immediately equate to job hunters easily getting a job. Before the pandemic it was already very difficult for job seekers and during the pandemic, it’s only been far more difficult. The job market is weird, and employers have the craziest expectations. One of the greatest examples is getting a higher education, such as a Masters’s degree, 10 years of experience, multiple certifications, only to then either be offered an astounding low pay.

It’s incredibly discerning, to say the least. The gig economy has been booming over the years, especially the past year with people switching to that as a means to make income. If you’re on social media apps such as Instagram and TikTok then chances are you’ve seen many people either quit or get laid off from their job, only to rise back thanks to building their own business. Business owners are booming right now, and it may be a great way to just end the depressing job search.

No longer will you have to spend hours a day looking at buzz-word-filled job listings, no longer will you be constantly ghosted by recruiters, and you can say goodbye to those depressing emails stating “Thank you for your application”. It may be time for you to try something new, get out of your comfort zone, showcase your skills, and learn along the way. Why stick to feeling the soul-crushing aches of constantly getting ghosted or rejected by careless companies when you can be your own boss and have a business. Here are some reasons why you may want to just go ahead and stop the treacherous job hunt and look into beginning your own business.

Growth mindset

When you’re just job hunting all day, you may not have the opportunity to use your skills. Even if you have a job, it may even be likely that you won’t have the chance to truly grow and develop. That’s one of the biggest reasons why employees leave their job. However, if you own your own business, you’ll be the one allowing yourself to learn. You’ll have the chance to learn what you want, and even keep up with the latest technology, especially if it helps your business.

The mindset of getting growth is one of the beliefs that skills and traits can be learned through attention and effort. Confidence also takes part in this as it’s one’s ability to learn the skills needed to run a business. You need to have confidence, therefore you need to believe in yourself. It’s mostly confident people that break away from their jobs or the constant struggle of the hunt to slip into a more entrepreneurial role. It’s also one of the factors of decision-making.

You’ll have control

Some people are leaders, so they choose to have a little bit more control. There can be clashes with two leaders who want to lead, so if you’re someone like that it may be better to have a business. This way, you know for a fact that you’re going to be in the decision-making process because you are the owner, after all! Many employers tend to leave out their employees in the decision-making process, let alone even be willing to hear their opinions.

What’s the point in being a team player if you’re going to constantly be ignored? So if you’re someone who is wanting to be in a hired position where you hope to express your opinions, be heard, have a say, and even have more control then you know for a fact you can immediately get this yourself as a business owner.  Even right down to all the nitty-gritty such as selecting gold foil business cards is something that you’ll get to do since you’re the business owner!

Customers and Clients are easier to obtain

You may be surprised to hear this but customers and clients can be fairly easy to obtain, all you need to do is to find an appropriate way to market yourself. You don’t need to jump through a bunch of hoops to get clients and customers like you do with getting a job. There are no interviews, no stages, no questionable unpaid assignment to show your skills, there is none of that. While yes, customers and clients can be very stressful to handle, maybe even more than having a job itself, it can be far more obtainable.

So why do many small businesses die then? Running a small business can indeed be incredibly difficult, the story is no different for freelancing either. Most die due to not properly allocating their funds and getting into debt. Owning a business does mean that your monthly and weekly pay will always be changing unlike the stability of a regular job. However, there are ways to ensure that you get clients and customers. Each business is different and there are different platforms you can use to market yourself and your business for free or very cheap.

This even includes just building your website, using an SEO agency,  and letting that help you find customers. Even posting content on social media is free and that’s one of the best ways that business owners utilize getting their presence noticed. In general, you’ll just need to look into ways to lock in and secure customers and clients, but it can potentially be far easier than landing a job. Even though the job hunt is dreadful, just know that this can be an option!

No more scams!

Scams are unfortunately so prevalent in job hunting. Sometimes when a job seems too good to be true, it most likely is. There are thankfully a few ways to avoid fraudsters but in the end, it’s so frustrating that it happens in the first place. Many people disguised as recruiters will try to find ways to phish for your personal information, other scammers will try to get your banking information, but it can even go much further than that!  Many companies will pretend that they’re hiring people, only to find out that they have a series of work that they need to do for the screening process.

This means that they tell applicants they have certain tasks that need to be done as a part of the application process. These tasks can either be a major presentation, fixing something, doing work that the company doesn’t want to pay a professional for. Also, these “tasks” for the “screening process” are completely unpaid. Not to mention that once the unpaid work is finished, the applicant gets ghosted.  It’s incredibly unfortunate and many companies are pulling this stunt on poor applicants.

While it is true that you can’t avoid scams, you can at least avoid wasting your time with companies that don’t want to hire you and don’t want to pay you.  However, some customers and clients will try to scam you out of your hard work as well. These however can be avoided and easily detected, unlike a job application. In general, you need to be on your toes and realize that you can’t avoid scams, but you can avoid doing unpaid labor.

Flexibility

Say goodbye to the standard 9 to 5 living because having your own business means you get to have your own schedule! How wonderful is that?!  That’s the beauty of being a business owner, you don’t have to work 9 to 5 if you don’t want to. You don’t have to work every weekday if you don’t want to. You can take as many vacation days as you’d like.  While being self-employed can mean working longer hours, this often tends to be at the very beginning to get the business up and running.
