   I’ve not tried Lidl but adore my local ALDI. Just the same as above comment’s: cheap and cheerful & NO carrier bags but for £ saved who cares? I love ALDI’s fajita kits at something like £1.68? and their equiv to Fruit Shoots; which seem healthier and bigger – six for approx £1.20? (sorry no receipt to hand) oh and their popcorn/ crisps FANTASTIC! Always laugh at their premium brand look-a-likies eg ‘Jive’ for Twix/ ‘Titan’ for Mars bars and ‘Racer’ for Snickers ‘Dream’ for Milkways etc etc!!! – which actually aren’t that bad and FABULOUS for cost effecive children parties!. Netto is good but only if you WANT the items they sell and restock is pretty hit and miss.

   As for budget meals:

   Gypsy toast – beaten egg soaked bread fried – with ketchup yum! for kids you could try to titilate with cutting out novelty shapes with cookie cutters

   Beef Stew – braised beef cubed and browned add beef 1pt gravy/ or stock and selection of potato/ carrot/ swede/ onion/ parsnip – bring to boil simmer for an hour (always tastes better next day)

   Toad in the hole – sausages and batter! you can but the mix if can’t make it

   Chicken pie – browned chicken breasts (cubed), seasoning, mushrooms fried, tin of campbell sorry: batchelor’s condensed mushroom soup (with a little milk to desired sauce consistancy) with a ‘jus-roll’ puff pastry lid! Cook for approx 40 mins/ 180-200c

   Tuna & sweetcorn bake – Pasta (cooked & drained), tin tuna, tin sweetcorn – that good ol’ campbells sorry batchelor’s mushroom soup – thrown together in an oven proofed dish, crush packet of crisps and mix with grated cheese bung on top and cook into oven for bout 30 mins/ 180-200c

   Simple quiche – ‘jus-roll’ short crust pastry lined oven proof dish – in hot oven to brown or what ever the term is for 15mins approx. Whisk 3 eggs add a little milk; add grated medium block cheese & chopped ham or whatever in fridge? onions? etc bung in oven for approx 30-45 mins/ 180c/ until brown

   Gammon joint – boil and carve for ham
   Shepherd’s pie or Cottage pies? Spam fritters..pancakes sweet and/or savoury..

   I won’t bore you with anymore…ask older relatives for their best hints and tips as they’ll have some recession beaters x

   I discovered Lidl some months ago when an Italian freind who knew it well introduced me. Its been trial and error, but the following are excellent. Smoked salmon better than top supermarkets and cheaper, black forest ham, parma ham, extra virgin olive oil, muesli as above is very good, jams and honey good, remember as my freind said these are in most cases top european brands, because we dont recognise them doesnt mean theyre not good, I suggest you give it a try and ignore the fact that its not as luxurious a shop you will be pleasantly surprised.

   I’m shocked to find someone writing on a money saving website who doesn’t use Lidl!! I thought even the greatest food snob understood the benefits of shopping there. The downside is no staff, no bags, £1 (returnable) trolleys but the benefits are all the benefits of European brands plus, as you say, cheaper branded goods. You didn’t mention jam, chocolate, beer, lardons and salami – all of which are fantastic quality at low prices. Lidl’s own unsalted butter is 84p and MUCH better than Anchor. Their fruit and veg is far superior to any other supermarket (although there is less variety) and at 30p for onions (kg) and pineaples for under a £1 what are you waiting for? The worst bit is that there is invariably a long wait at the checkout but the staff are well trained and polite. Just go into ‘the Zone’ take your own bags and get in there….!
