Britain’s biggest bill just started paying you back

For most of us, rent or the mortgage is the single biggest amount of money leaving our account each month – and, until now, one of the only major bills that couldn’t earn you anything back. Loyalty schemes will reward you for a coffee, a supermarket shop or a tank of petrol, but the payment that dwarfs them all has largely been left alone.

Yonder, the rewards debit and credit card built around dining and travel perks, thinks that’s a gap worth closing. It’s just launched Rent & Mortgage Rewards, and says it’s the first FCA-regulated card in the UK to let people earn points on both rent and mortgage payments.

How it works

There’s no new banking product to open and no extra step for your landlord, agent or lender. You tell Yonder how much you pay, when, and who it goes to; Yonder then sends the money on your behalf from your linked account, and points land automatically. There’s no handling fee or admin charge for paying this way.

Renters paying by standing order can start earning straight away. Mortgage holders are covered too – around 70% of UK mortgage providers, including Halifax, Nationwide, Barclays, TSB and Virgin Money, support the feature at launch, and Yonder expects most of the rest to follow by the end of the year.

What you can actually earn

The rate depends on which of Yonder’s two tiers you’re on, and there’s a boosted introductory rate for anyone earning rewards before 31 December 2026. Free members earn a flat 1,000 points a month on their rent or mortgage payment during the launch period, worth up to £5 in rewards value. Premium members earn 5x points per £1 spent, capped at 10,000 points a month, worth up to £50. After the launch period, the standard rate drops to 200 points a month for free members and 1x points per £1 (capped at 2,000 points) for Premium. Exclusions and T&Cs apply.

It’s not going to cover the rent outright, but on a payment that previously earned nothing at all, it’s a meaningful bit of found value for very little effort.

More travel perks for Premium members

The rent and mortgage feature lands alongside a broader refresh of Yonder’s Premium membership. Premium members now get a £50 credit every six months towards a Hertz car hire or a hotel booking, plus a £20 credit every six months for No.1 Lounges at UK airports, on top of the other features already included on Premium. The credits are applied every six months and are subject to a minimum spend. T&Cs apply.

Tim Chong, Yonder’s CEO and co-founder, said: “Our members already spend their points on everything from coffee runs to weekends away, and that’s the part of Yonder they love most. Rent and mortgage payments were an obvious gap in earning potential for our members, so we’ve closed it. This new feature, along with the new benefits of our Premium membership, means it’s now even easier for members to turn their everyday spending into experiences to remember.”

Worth it if you’re already paying by card

Yonder members have redeemed more than £9m in rewards so far, across a network of over 300 travel, dining and lifestyle partners including Hertz, JustEat, Riverford and Selfridges. If you’re the kind of person who already chases down cashback and points wherever you can get them, adding your rent or mortgage payment to the list is a low-effort way to squeeze a bit more value out of a bill you’re paying anyway.

Borrow responsibly. UK only and 18+. A membership fee of £17.99 a month applies to Premium, and the Rep APR is 73.1% for the Premium credit card and 31.61% for the free credit card. Terms and conditions apply.
