Free Food and Supermarket Discounts for People on Benefits

Reading Time: 6 minutes

There is no single UK discount card for everyone receiving benefits, but there are genuine ways to get free groceries, cheaper supermarket food and hot meals. We checked the schemes currently available and separated the real help from expired promotions.

The quick answer

Receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit or another benefit does not automatically give you a discount at every supermarket, café or pub. The strongest confirmed help comes from NHS Healthy Start, Community Shop, social supermarkets, free community meals, school food support and surplus-food apps.

Free and discounted food at a glance

Scheme What you could receive Who can use it?
NHS Healthy Start Up to £9.30 a week per eligible child Qualifying pregnant people and families with children under four
Community Shop Groceries at around a third of normal retail prices Local residents receiving a means-tested benefit
Community Shop kitchens Discounted meals and free meals for children Community Shop members and families
Community Grocery A set number of grocery items from £5 Anyone who becomes a member
FoodCycle A free hot community meal Anyone, with no referral required
Olio Free surplus food from shops, cafés and neighbours Anyone using the app
Food banks Emergency groceries A referral is often required
Asda Café Children’s meals for £1 at participating cafés Open to everyone

Prices, eligibility and availability can change. Check the scheme or venue before travelling.

1. Use NHS Healthy Start in supermarkets

Healthy Start is one of the most valuable food schemes for low-income families. If you are more than 10 weeks pregnant or responsible for a child under four, you may qualify if you receive an eligible benefit and meet the scheme’s conditions.

Successful applicants receive a prepaid card which can be used at participating supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and food shops.

How much is Healthy Start worth?

  • £4.65 a week from the tenth week of pregnancy
  • £9.30 a week for each child from birth until their first birthday
  • £4.65 a week for each child aged between one and four

Money is added every four weeks. It can be used for plain cow’s milk, infant formula, fresh, frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables, and fresh, dried or tinned pulses. Eligible families can also receive free vitamins.

The card cannot be used as a general supermarket gift card. It will not cover alcohol, ready meals, non-food products or fruit and vegetables with added sugar, salt, fat or flavourings.

Check your eligibility and apply through NHS Healthy Start. Scotland operates a separate scheme called Best Start Foods.

2. Join a Community Shop for heavily discounted groceries

Community Shop provides one of the clearest food discounts specifically connected to means-tested benefits. It currently has 15 membership-based stores around the UK. Membership is free if you live within a store’s catchment area and meet its eligibility rules.

Benefits that may qualify

Community Shop lists Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Tax Credits, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance among its examples of means-tested benefits.

The stores sell surplus groceries and household essentials which might otherwise have gone to waste. Members may be able to buy a weekly shop for around a third of normal retail prices, although stock changes regularly.

Community Shop also runs Community Kitchens with discounted meals. Its official website states that children eat free at its Community Shop locations.

Find a Community Shop and check membership.

3. Try a Community Grocery

Community Groceries offer affordable food in a shop-style setting. They are not reserved exclusively for benefits claimants and anyone can normally apply to become a member.

Current standard shop sizes

  • 12 points of food for £5
  • 18 points for £7.50
  • 24 points for £10
  • 30 points for £12.50

At the time of checking, annual membership costs £5. Exact stock depends on available surplus but can include fresh produce, bread, chilled food and cupboard essentials.

Some branches also have Pay-It-Forward support. If a member cannot afford a shop that week, they can discreetly ask the manager whether a locally donated shop is available.

Find a Community Grocery near you.

4. Find free hot meals and supermarket surplus

FoodCycle meals need no referral

FoodCycle turns surplus ingredients into free community meals. You do not need to receive benefits, prove your income or obtain a food-bank voucher. You can find a participating meal, check its opening time and turn up.

The meals are normally served at a shared table by volunteers. They are intended for anyone who would benefit from a hot meal or some company.

Use FoodCycle’s free meal finder.

Claim surplus food through Olio

Olio is a food-sharing app where volunteers and neighbours list food for collection. Food Waste Heroes collect surplus stock from participating supermarkets, bakeries, cafés and other businesses before offering it locally.

Depending on your area, listings might include bread, pastries, sandwiches, salads, fruit, vegetables, chilled products and cupboard ingredients. The free listings are open to everyone, not only benefits claimants.

Inspect food carefully, follow storage instructions and pay close attention to use-by dates. Visit Olio to check local listings.

Ask a food bank for emergency groceries

If you have little or no money for food, contact a food bank rather than waiting for a supermarket promotion. Many require a referral or electronic voucher from Citizens Advice, a GP, health visitor, school, social worker, housing association, local council or support charity.

Please do not avoid asking because you think somebody else needs the food more. Emergency food services exist for people who cannot currently afford enough to eat.

5. Claim free school and holiday food

From the beginning of the 2026 to 2027 school year, children in England whose household receives Universal Credit are entitled to free school meals. Parents should still make sure their child has been registered, as registration may also help the school obtain additional funding.

Different rules and programmes apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check with your school or council.

In England, eligible children may also receive free places through the Holiday Activities and Food programme during some school holidays. Sessions normally combine activities with at least one meal. Search your council’s website for “Holiday Activities and Food” or “HAF programme” and book early where required.

Read the current government free school meals guidance.

6. Are there benefits discounts in cafés and pubs?

Major café and pub chains generally do not provide a permanent discount simply because someone receives Universal Credit, Pension Credit or another benefit. However, some inexpensive offers are open to everybody.

Asda Café children’s meals

Asda has operated a Kids Eat for £1 offer throughout the year at participating cafés. The offer is not restricted to benefits claimants. Availability and menus can vary, so confirm it with your local café before making a special journey.

Local pay-it-forward cafés

Some independent cafés allow customers to pay for an extra drink or meal for someone who cannot afford one. These may be described as suspended coffees, pay-it-forward meals or community tabs. There is no complete national directory, so ask local community centres, churches or food-support groups.

What about pub meals?

We could not confirm a permanent nationwide pub discount specifically for benefits claimants. Individual pubs may run community meals or local promotions, but check directly and be wary of undated social-media posts.

Check the total cost: a “free” child’s meal may not save money if it requires the purchase of an expensive adult main course. Compare the final family bill before ordering.

Avoid these common traps

  • Do not assume your benefits statement is a discount card. A supermarket will only provide a benefits-linked reduction if it participates in a particular scheme.
  • Check offer dates. Old cost-of-living promotions still appear in search results years after they ended.
  • Do not pay someone to arrange free food. Applying for Healthy Start or locating a food bank or FoodCycle meal should not require an unofficial fee.
  • Be cautious with food loans. Borrowing for groceries can leave a repayment gap the following week. Check free emergency support first.

What to do if you need food today

  1. Contact Citizens Advice and explain that you need emergency food help.
  2. Find your nearest food bank and check whether it requires a referral.
  3. Look for a FoodCycle meal or local community kitchen.
  4. Check Olio for surplus food available nearby.
  5. Ask your council about emergency welfare or crisis support.
  6. If you have children, contact their school or health visitor.
  7. If you are pregnant or have a child under four, check Healthy Start immediately.

You do not have to wait until the situation becomes unmanageable. Food charities and community organisations would generally prefer you to ask early rather than go without meals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a supermarket discount because I receive Universal Credit?

There is no universal discount at the major supermarkets for everyone receiving Universal Credit. However, qualifying families may use Healthy Start, while local Community Shops and other social supermarkets can provide cheaper groceries.

Can I get free food without a food-bank referral?

Yes. FoodCycle meals do not require a referral, and free food listed on Olio is open to users of the app. Food banks may have different rules and often require a voucher.

Do pubs give discounts to people on benefits?

We could not confirm a permanent nationwide pub discount for benefits claimants. Some pubs may provide local community meals or offers open to all customers.

Can Pension Credit claimants get cheaper food?

Pension Credit is included among the means-tested benefits accepted for Community Shop membership, subject to living within a participating store’s local area. Other local social supermarkets may set their own rules.

The bottom line

There is no universal supermarket, café or pub discount for everyone receiving benefits. The most useful direct support includes NHS Healthy Start, free school meals and Community Shop membership where a location is available.

Community Groceries, FoodCycle, Olio and local food banks can provide further help, sometimes without any need to prove that you receive benefits. Always check the terms before travelling because prices, opening times and local availability can change quickly.
