Updated October 2026. Prices and offers may vary between branches. Always check before travelling. Can you still get a proper hot meal for £5 or less in Britain? With the cost of eating out continuing to put pressure on household budgets, finding somewhere to sit down and enjoy a cooked meal without spending a fortune can feel increasingly difficult.

But there are still bargains to be found. From IKEA restaurant deals and Wetherspoon breakfasts to supermarket cafés, two-for-one restaurant offers and traditional greasy spoons, a little research could save you a surprising amount.

And this isn’t just about grabbing lunch during a working day. For pensioners, people living alone, students and anyone who finds cooking difficult or expensive, an affordable hot meal can make a real difference.

We’ve rounded up the places worth checking, how to bring restaurant bills down to £5 per person and what to order in your local café to get the most food for your money.

THE QUICK ANSWER: WHERE TO EAT FOR £5

IKEA: Two fish-and-chip meals for £10 for IKEA Family members under its October promotion.

Wetherspoon: Check smaller breakfasts, beans on toast and jacket potatoes. Prices vary by pub.

Independent cafés: Eggs on toast, beans on toast and small breakfasts are often the first things to investigate.

Two-for-one deals: Two qualifying £10 main courses for the price of one work out at £5 per person.

Community cafés: Some offer subsidised, pay-what-you-can or free cooked meals.

Important: Not every option is available nationwide or every day. We distinguish confirmed deals from places where you’ll need to check local prices.

Where can you get a hot meal for £5 or less?

Here’s a quick comparison of the places worth checking first.

Where What to order Cost
IKEA Two fish-and-chip meals £5 each with qualifying offer
Wetherspoon Small breakfast, beans on toast or jacket potato Check local menu
Traditional cafés Eggs on toast, beans on toast, breakfast bap Check locally
Asda Café Smaller hot dishes and breakfast options Check participating café
Two-for-one restaurants Two qualifying main courses £5 each if the final bill is £10
Community kitchens Subsidised cooked meals Free or low-cost

CHECK BEFORE YOU GOSome deals require loyalty membership, a qualifying purchase, two diners or a particular time of day. A £7.50 adult meal doesn’t become a £5 meal simply because the restaurant is running a promotion.

We’ve also included family offers where the average cost per person is below £5, but clearly identified those separately.

1. IKEA: two hot fish-and-chip meals for £10

IKEA is one of the first places we’d recommend investigating if you want a cooked meal without paying typical restaurant prices.

The furniture retailer has become known for its affordable restaurant food, including Swedish meatballs, fish and chips, breakfasts and low-cost children’s dishes.

Its October 2026 promotion offers two fish-and-chip meals for £10 to IKEA Family members at participating restaurants, until 31 October.

IKEA HOT MEAL DEAL

£5 per person

What you get: Two fish-and-chip meals for £10.

Who qualifies: IKEA Family members at participating restaurants.

Offer ends: 31 October 2026.

Why it’s good: A proper hot main course in a sit-down restaurant.

Check IKEA restaurant offers

IKEA Family membership is free, and selected stores also offer members complimentary tea or filtered coffee under their restaurant conditions.

For families, children’s meals starting from 95p can make the overall bill even more attractive.

2. Wetherspoon: don’t overlook the smaller cooked breakfasts

Wetherspoon can be an excellent starting point when you’re looking for somewhere warm to sit and eat without spending too much.

Its menu includes cooked breakfasts, beans on toast, jacket potatoes, pizzas and other hot dishes.

Prices vary between pubs, however, so a meal that costs under £5 in one location may cost more in another.

The chain has previously offered selected meals and soft drinks for £4.99 during promotional periods, but these aren’t guaranteed to be available throughout the year.

THE WETHERSPOON MONEY-SAVING TRICK

Look at the breakfast menu before ordering lunch.

Beans on toast, eggs on toast and smaller cooked breakfasts may offer a filling alternative to a more expensive burger or main meal.

A jacket potato with beans can also be worth comparing with the standard lunch dishes.

Best tip: Check the menu for your actual pub in the Wetherspoon app before setting off.

3. Morrisons Café: a surprisingly good family bargain

Morrisons cafés serve cooked breakfasts, jacket potatoes, fish and chips, lasagne and other substantial hot dishes.

Not every adult meal costs under £5, but the supermarket’s family offers can bring the average cost of eating out down considerably.

One advertised promotion combines two adult meals and refillable drinks for £15 with two qualifying free children’s meals.

MORRISONS FAMILY MEAL CALCULATION

£3.75 per person

Two adults and two eligible children: £15 total under the qualifying combined promotion.

That’s £3.75 per person across a family of four.

Important: The adult meals still work out at £7.50 each. The £3.75 figure is the family average, not the individual adult meal price.

Check participating cafés, qualifying meals and children’s eligibility before ordering.

See Morrisons Café offers

Morrisons also advertises a small breakfast and refillable hot drink for customers aged over 60 at £6.50. Although this exceeds our £5 target, it may be useful for older readers looking for an affordable breakfast out.

4. Asda Café: cheap hot dishes and over-60s discounts

Asda cafés are another place worth checking for traditional cooked food without restaurant-level prices.

Menus vary, but smaller dishes such as beans on toast, breakfast options and hot sandwiches may offer better value than a large main course.

Asda has also advertised a 10% café discount for over-60s on Wednesdays at participating locations.

OVER-60s: CHECK FOR WEDNESDAY SAVINGS

If an eligible hot dish costs £5.50, a 10% discount would reduce it to £4.95.

That’s an example calculation, not a confirmed menu price.

Check your local café’s prices and whether the discount applies before ordering.

Asda has also run £1 soup-and-hot-drink promotions for over-60s in previous winters. Don’t assume those seasonal offers are currently active.

5. The traditional greasy spoon: where £5 might still go a long way

Before you head to a national chain, consider your local greasy spoon.

We’re talking about traditional cafés with mugs of tea, laminated menus, bacon sandwiches, fried eggs and regular customers who know exactly what they’re ordering.

Not every independent café is cheap. A large full English can easily cost more than £5, particularly in city centres.

But the trick is to look beyond the biggest breakfast on the menu.

WHAT TO ORDER IN A GREASY SPOON FOR THE BEST FILL

  • Beans on toast: A filling hot option providing fibre and protein.
  • Eggs on toast: A straightforward, substantial breakfast or lunch.
  • Small cooked breakfast: Often better value than buying individual breakfast items separately.
  • Jacket potato with beans: Worth checking when you need a proper lunch.
  • Sausage or bacon bap: Compare portion size and whether extras are included.
  • Homemade soup and bread: A warming option that may be cheaper than a main course.

Our top tip: Compare the price of a small breakfast with eggs or beans on toast plus a drink. The cheapest dish isn’t necessarily the best value if it leaves you hungry.

How to find a genuinely cheap local café

Look for cafés near markets, industrial estates, bus stations and shopping areas that cater to local workers.

These may have daily specials, smaller breakfasts or basic hot dishes that are cheaper than their full lunch menu.

Ask whether a hot drink comes with the meal, whether there are lunchtime specials and whether smaller portions are available.

Some cafés also have a specials board that doesn’t appear on their online menu.

6. Local eateries: where to find a hot meal near you

Independent cafés can offer some of the best bargains, but prices and menus are much harder to compare nationally.

In York, for example, traditional cafés such as Mrs Greedy’s on Burton Stone Lane and The Blossom Café on Blossom Street are examples of the kinds of independent venues worth investigating for breakfast and lunch.

These are local café suggestions rather than verified under-£5 deals. Always check the current menu.

  • Community café near me

7. Two-for-one restaurant offers: how to eat for £5 each

One of the easiest ways to bring restaurant prices down is to eat with somebody else and use a genuine two-for-one main-course offer.

If two qualifying main courses cost £10 each and one is free, you pay £10 in total, or £5 per person.

THE £5 TWO-FOR-ONE TRICK

First main course: £10

Second main course: £10

Eligible two-for-one discount: -£10

Total: £10 for two people

Cost per person: £5.

Remember that drinks, starters, service charges and any membership costs may be extra.

Tastecard

Tastecard offers dining discounts at participating restaurants, including selected two-for-one main-course deals, percentage discounts on food and reductions on bills.

However, not every participating restaurant offers the same discount.

Search for restaurants near you and check the exact offer before booking. If you need to pay for membership, factor that into your savings.

Browse Tastecard restaurant offers.

Meerkat Meals

If you already have access to Meerkat Meals through an eligible Compare the Market purchase, it’s worth checking participating restaurants.

Offers and restrictions vary, and not all discounts are two-for-one. Some restaurants offer a percentage reduction instead.

Always calculate the final bill before assuming it works out at £5 each.

BEWARE THE FAKE BARGAIN

A meal reduced from £18 to £9 is a decent saving, but it’s still not a meal under £5.

And a two-for-one offer on two £16 main courses still costs £8 per person.

Always compare the amount you actually pay, rather than the advertised percentage discount.

8. Could sharing a large meal save money?

Some cafés and restaurants serve portions large enough to share, particularly pizzas, jacket potatoes and sharing platters.

If a venue allows two people to share a £9.50 dish, that works out at £4.75 each.

But make sure the portion is genuinely sufficient for two and that the restaurant doesn’t charge an additional fee.

This can work particularly well for people who prefer smaller portions.

9. Greggs and other bakeries: cheap hot food on the go

Sometimes you don’t have time for a sit-down meal and simply need something hot to eat during the working day.

Greggs, independent bakeries and supermarket hot-food counters are worth checking for savoury bakes, sausage rolls and other affordable options.

However, there’s a difference between a hot snack and a proper meal.

A single sausage roll might cost less than £5, but it won’t necessarily be as substantial as a jacket potato or cooked breakfast.

Food sold from a heated display also isn’t always guaranteed to be served hot, so ask if temperature matters to you.

OUR VALUE TESTAsk yourself what £5 actually buys. A hot bake and drink might be convenient, but a plate of beans and eggs or a jacket potato could offer a more substantial meal for a similar price.

10. Where can pensioners get cheap hot meals?

For older people, an inexpensive café meal can provide more than food. It can offer somewhere warm to sit, an opportunity to socialise and a break from cooking.

Supermarket cafés, community lunch clubs, social centres and subsidised meal schemes can all be worth investigating.

Some venues offer smaller portions or special senior menus, while others provide discounts on certain days.

MoneyMagpie has a separate guide covering free community meals, supermarket café discounts, lunch clubs and other affordable food options for older people.

11. Where can families eat for under £5 per person?

Sometimes the best way to feed a family cheaply is to look for restaurants offering free children’s meals with a qualifying adult purchase.

Even when the adult main costs more than £5, the average cost across the whole family may be considerably lower.

IKEA’s inexpensive children’s menu and qualifying Morrisons family promotions are particularly worth checking.

TAKING THE KIDS OUT?

MoneyMagpie regularly updates its guide to restaurants, pubs and supermarket cafés where children can eat free or cheaply.

It’s particularly useful during school holidays and half-term.

12. Where can you get a free hot meal if money is tight?

For some people, even £5 is too much to spend on a single meal.

There are organisations across the UK providing free or subsidised cooked food, sometimes with no requirement to prove financial hardship.

FoodCycle

FoodCycle provides free community meals in locations across the UK, bringing people together over cooked food prepared using surplus ingredients.

It’s particularly valuable for people experiencing financial pressure or social isolation.

Find your nearest FoodCycle community meal.

Community cafés and pay-what-you-can kitchens

Some community cafés offer low-cost lunches, subsidised meals or pay-what-you-can food.

Check your local council’s community directory or search for community kitchens and social supermarkets in your area.

Sikh gurdwaras

Many Sikh gurdwaras offer langar, a free vegetarian community meal open to everyone, regardless of religion or background.

Visitors should respect local customs and check meal times before attending.

NEED FOOD TODAY?

If you can’t afford a meal, don’t feel you have to spend money to access help.

Community kitchens, local food support organisations and council welfare services may be able to help.

Check FoodCycle for community meals and Trussell for information about emergency food support.

13. Seven ways to make your £5 lunch budget go further

  1. Check breakfast menus: Eggs, beans and toast can be cheaper than lunchtime main courses.
  2. Ask about daily specials: Homemade soup or a jacket potato might not appear on the main menu.
  3. Use two-for-one deals: But check the actual price and any membership costs.
  4. Try supermarket cafés: They’re often overlooked when deciding where to eat.
  5. Skip unnecessary extras: Drinks, chips and desserts can quickly double the bill.
  6. Check senior and family discounts: Eligibility can make a significant difference.
  7. Look for traditional cafés: A simple cooked breakfast may be better value than a branded restaurant meal.

How much could you save by finding a cheaper hot lunch?

If you usually spend £8 on lunch and manage to find a £5 alternative, you’ll save £3 each time.

THE £5 LUNCH SAVINGS

Saving per lunch: £3

Five lunches per week: £15 saved

Over 48 weeks: £720 saved

That’s £720 a year.

Of course, taking food from home may still be cheaper. But for those occasions when you need a cooked meal away from home, finding affordable options can make a substantial difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really get a hot meal for under £5 in the UK?

Yes, although options are limited. Some restaurant promotions bring the cost down to £5 per person, while selected cafés and pubs offer smaller hot dishes within that budget. Prices and availability vary.

Which supermarket café is cheapest?

It depends on the branch, menu and available promotions. Morrisons and Asda are worth checking, particularly for family deals, senior discounts and smaller cooked dishes.

Can you get a full English breakfast for £5?

Some independent cafés and pubs may offer a small cooked breakfast for £5 or less. Larger full English breakfasts are less likely to fall within that budget.

Are two-for-one meals worth it?

They can be, particularly if you’re eating with somebody else. But always check the final bill, including drinks, service charges and membership costs.

Where can I get a cheap hot meal near me?

Start with your nearest Wetherspoon, supermarket café, traditional breakfast café or community café. Check local menus before travelling.

Where can I get a free hot meal?

FoodCycle community meals, some community kitchens and Sikh gurdwaras provide free cooked meals. Check local availability and serving times.

The verdict: where should you go for a hot meal under £5?

If you’re eating with somebody else, IKEA’s current two-for-£10 fish-and-chips offer is an excellent starting point while the promotion lasts.

If you’re eating alone, look at smaller dishes in Wetherspoon or a traditional café. Beans on toast, eggs on toast and small breakfasts may offer the most straightforward route to a hot meal within your budget.

For families, calculate the cost of the whole bill rather than simply looking at the adult meal price.

And if money is particularly tight, remember that community organisations can provide genuinely free cooked meals.

Most importantly, eating cheaply doesn’t have to mean rushing through a sandwich or spending money you can’t afford.

Sometimes a proper plate of hot food and somewhere comfortable to sit is exactly what you need.
