Eating out can easily cost £15 or £20 a person, but pensioners and people aged over 60 have several ways to pay much less. There are discounted supermarket breakfasts, smaller senior portions, community lunches and completely free meals available across the UK.
Some deals are available nationally, while others are run by local charities, churches, community centres and cafés. Age limits and prices vary, so always check before making a special journey.

Could Asda’s £1 over-60s meal return this winter?
Asda has repeatedly offered one of Britain’s cheapest supermarket café deals. Its Winter Warmer promotion allowed customers aged 60 and over to buy soup, bread and unlimited tea or coffee for just £1. The latest confirmed offer ran in 212 Asda cafés from 1 November 2025 until the end of February 2026. Asda has not yet announced whether it will return for winter 2026/27, so shoppers should not assume the £1 meal is currently available. However, the promotion has returned for several consecutive winters. It is therefore worth watching the Asda newsroom and asking your local café as the weather gets colder.Important £1 deal warning

Morrisons Café breakfast for over-60s
Morrisons currently advertises a small breakfast and refillable hot drink for £6.50 for customers aged over 60. The supermarket also offers a slice of cake and a hot drink for £4, although that deal is not restricted to older customers. People aged 60 and over can get two courses from £6.49 at participating Flaming Grill pubs. Diners choose a starter and main or a main and dessert. A third course can be added for £1.50. The smaller senior portions include favourites such as fish and chips, sausage and mash, an all-day breakfast and vegetarian sausage and mash. Dessert choices may include ice cream or chocolate fudge brownie. The offer is advertised all day from Monday to Friday. Prices and participation can vary, and proof of age may be requested. Some Greene King pubs run dedicated menus for people aged 60 and over. Prices differ by venue. One current example offers two courses for £7.95 or three for £8.95, Monday to Friday until 5pm. Choices can include tomato soup, fish and chips, sausage and mash, scampi, macaroni cheese, apple crumble and ice cream. You may need to book and pay in advance, and certain branches may be able to help arrange transport for an additional charge. Free meals at Sikh gurdwaras
Sikh gurdwaras traditionally serve a free communal vegetarian meal known as langar. Visitors do not have to be Sikh: people of every faith and background are welcome. Guests are normally expected to cover their heads, remove their shoes and behave respectfully. Serving days and times vary, so contact the gurdwara before visiting. Donations and offers to help are often welcomed but should not be compulsory in return for a meal.Churches, community centres and warm spaces
Churches and community centres frequently run low-cost lunch clubs for older residents. A cooked lunch, dessert and hot drink may cost a small donation or around £3 to £8. Some councils publish directories of lunch clubs, community cafés and warm spaces. “Pensioner” does not have one fixed meaning for restaurant deals. One business may use 60, another 65 and another State Pension age. Take proof of age and check the individual conditions.

Cheap-meal promotions can be withdrawn or changed, while branches may set different prices and serving times. Ask whether drinks, side dishes or supplements cost extra and whether the offer is available on bank holidays. The £1 promotions understandably attract the biggest headlines, but a local lunch club or community meal could offer better long-term value.
