Reading Time: < 1 minutePeople struggling to make ends meet and in need of money could get a free £120 to help with essential costs. The Household Support Fund (HSF) is a government scheme that helps with household bills throughout winter.
On 30 September 2021, the government announced that vulnerable households across the UK can access a new £500 million support fund to help them with essentials over the winter. The funding covers 6 October 2021 to 31 March 2022 inclusive.
The new Household Support Fund will be distributed by councils in England to those who need it most, and will take the form of small payments supporting vulnerable households with their essential needs like food, clothing and utilities.
Different amounts will go to different councils, depending on size and need of area.

I am 76 and have never claimed benefits.
I now find myself in a bewildering array of confusing sources of help.
I thought universal credit (which I do not get) was meant to simplify any paths to help.
