Autumn Budget 2026: What does it mean for your money?
Chancellor John Healey’s first Autumn Budget has arrived, and while Westminster will be busy debating the political implications, for most of us there’s a much simpler question: will we actually be better or worse off?
With household finances already stretched by rising everyday costs, energy bills and the price of food, millions of people will be looking for some indication that things might get easier. Whether you’re working, retired, raising a family, saving for your first home or simply trying to make your money go further, the announcements made on 28 October 2026 could have a real impact on your finances.
This has arguably been one of the most heavily speculated-about Budgets in recent memory, with weeks of headlines, predictions and warnings about possible changes to taxes, pensions, savings, property and household spending. For anyone trying to make sensible financial decisions, the sheer volume of speculation has made it difficult to know what to believe, let alone what to prepare for.
But now the important question isn’t what might happen. It’s what has actually been announced, which predictions proved accurate, which didn’t, and what will the decisions mean for the money in our pockets?
At MoneyMagpie, we’re putting the politics to one side and concentrating on what matters to you. We’re looking beyond the headlines to examine the figures, the small print and the practical consequences, including which households stand to benefit, who might face additional costs and when any changes will actually take effect.
The big questions we’re answering
Will I pay more tax?
Have income tax thresholds or other taxes changed, and could more of my earnings be taxed even if the headline rates stay the same?
Will my energy bills come down?
What has been announced about standing charges, electricity costs and energy support, and how much could households actually save?
Will pensioners be better off?
What happens to the State Pension, the triple lock, pension taxation and the support available to older people?
What happens to my savings and ISAs?
Are Cash ISAs changing, will savings allowances remain the same, and what should savers consider before making any decisions?
Will workers take home more money?
What does the Budget mean for the minimum wage, tax deductions and the amount people actually receive in their pay packets?
Is there any help for families struggling with costs?
Are there new payments, benefits, grants or other forms of support, and who qualifies?
What about renters, homeowners and first-time buyers?
Are there changes to housing support, property taxes, mortgages or schemes designed to help people onto the property ladder?
Will everyday life become cheaper?
What does the Budget mean for fuel, transport, food, shopping and other regular household expenses?
When will the changes happen?
Which measures take effect immediately, which begin in 2027 or later, and which still need to become law?
What was predicted, and what actually happened?
One of the most useful things we can do is separate the confirmed announcements from the speculation that dominated the weeks leading up to the Budget. Some proposed changes attracted enormous attention, particularly around pensions, property and savings, but a rumour is not the same as a government decision.
We’ll look at what was announced, what was ruled out or left unchanged, and whether any proposals are still being considered. Just as importantly, we’ll explain whether you need to take any action now or whether it’s better to wait for the full details.
What should you do next?
For every major announcement, we’ll be asking three practical questions: Does this affect me? How much money could I gain or lose? Is there anything I need to do?
Because understanding the Autumn Budget shouldn’t require a degree in economics. It should help you make informed decisions about your own money.
