Best SMSF Setup Provider on the Gold Coast: 3 Compared on the Extras You Pay

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Self-managed super funds keep swelling. As of March 31, 2026, the ATO logged 672,805 funds holding AUD 1.06 trillion, up 7 percent year on year. Yet for would-be Gold Coast trustees, the real puzzle is not picking investments. It is decoding what a headline “$495 SMSF setup” costs after you add the ASIC company fee, the first-year ATO levy and a compulsory audit.

To make that math transparent, we compared three SMSF-setup providers that serve the Gold Coast and modelled what a straightforward, two-member fund would spend in its first three years.

Three Gold Coast-ready providers at a glance

Provider Corporate-trustee setup (AUD)* Annual “simple fund” fee (AUD per year) Independent audit included? Three-year provider cost (AUD)** Key item to confirm
SMSF Australia 2,000 + GST (ASIC 636 covered) 1,300 + GST Yes 6,490 incl. GST ESA and registered-office cost after year 1
Superannuation Warehouse 1,400 (confirm ASIC fee and GST) 60 to 70 per month Confirm 3,560 to 3,920 Two conflicting price pages
Plant & Associates 1,870 (GST status unclear) 1,760 No, add 330 8,140 Fee page shows no revision date

Assumes a new, two-member SMSF with a corporate trustee.

Provider fees only. Add about 518 AUD in ATO levy the first year, 259 AUD in later years, plus three ASIC company-review fees of 70 AUD each.

All prices came from each provider’s public website on August 5, 2026, and can change without notice. Always request a dated, written quote before you commit.

1. SMSF Australia: best for a fully bundled legal and accounting setup

According to SMSF Australia, the $2,000 + GST setup price already covers the $636 ASIC company fee, all ATO registrations and 12 months of registered-office service with an ESA. Having those essentials bundled upfront is a key reason SMSF Australia topped our transparency score.

The setup fee covers the SMSF deed, a special-purpose constitution, ATO compliance documents, binding death-benefit nominations, an investment-strategy template, rollovers and bank-account assistance.

A simple fund holding bank accounts, term deposits, listed shares and managed funds costs 1,300 AUD + GST a year. Two higher tiers support property, crypto or private loans, starting from 2,000 AUD + GST. Every tier includes financial statements, a dedicated accountant, the independent audit, tax-return lodgement and a Class Super licence.

Documents are drafted within one to two business days once director IDs and ID checks arrive. ABN registration is instant about 90 percent of the time. Otherwise expect one to two months, and rollovers stay blocked until Super Fund Lookup shows the fund as registered.

Watch-outs: ESA and registered-office renewal fees are not shown after year 1, card payments attract a 2 percent surcharge, and borrowing for property adds 1,400 AUD + GST for the bare-trust package.

2. Superannuation Warehouse: lowest visible price, two fee tables to reconcile

Everything happens online: upload ID, nominate directors, and the firm lodges the ABN and TFN. Billing starts when the first contribution clears, which the firm says should happen within six weeks.

What is unclear matters more than what is cheap. The FAQ hints that audit is included, but the fee pages never state it, so add 400 to 600 AUD a year to be safe. GST treatment of the monthly fee is not stated, and plan limits for property, crypto or high-volume trading are not explained. Budget also for a 2 percent card surcharge and an exit fee of about 250 AUD.

This can be the least-cost option for simple portfolios, provided the lower monthly fee and audit inclusion appear on your engagement letter.

3. Plant & Associates: detailed local pricing, but check the date and GST

The website lists 770 AUD for the trust deed and 1,100 AUD for the corporate trustee, about 1,870 AUD in total. That figure appears to cover ASIC registration and the first-year company review, but confirm it in writing.

Annual fees run 1,760 AUD for listed shares or a pension fund and 1,980 AUD for direct property, with the independent audit adding 330 AUD. Across three years the provider portion comes to roughly 8,140 AUD before statutory levies.

The fee page shows no last-updated date and GST treatment is not stated, so insist on a dated, GST-inclusive quote before committing.

The hidden extras that inflate a “cheap” SMSF

A low setup fee can look attractive, until the second invoice arrives. Every fund faces three unavoidable statutory charges:

  1. ATO supervisory levy. A new fund prepays two years in its first tax return for 518 AUD, then 259 AUD each year after.
  2. ASIC company-registration fee. 636 AUD, indexed on 1 July each year.
  3. ASIC annual review. 70 AUD a year for a special-purpose trustee company.

Those three alone add about 1,200 AUD over the first three years. Then confirm the extras: the independent audit at 330 to 600 AUD a year if it is not included, ESA and registered-office renewal at 60 to 120 AUD annually after year 1, a bare-trust package of 1,400 to 2,500 AUD if you borrow for property, and exit or wind-up fees ranging from nothing to 1,500 AUD.

Copy that list into your quote request and ask each provider to fill in the blanks. Only then can you compare all-in costs side by side.

Conclusion

Choosing the cheapest SMSF setup quote on paper rarely delivers the lowest real-world cost. By mapping every statutory charge and provider extra in advance, Gold Coast trustees can avoid bill-shock, stay compliant and keep more retirement dollars invested rather than spent on unexpected fees.
