I’ve just had an application approved for universal credit – won’t be receiving enough to support myself financially though so I was wondering whether you’re allowed to apply for casual part-time work. I’ve seen a need for fruit pickers but might be minimal hours at the moment. How will these affect each other? Will I lose universal credit altogether if I start work?April 20, 2020 at 15:07 #150888Annie ThorpeKeymaster
You can work while you’re getting Universal Credit, you just need to report your income to them. You’re allowed to earn up to a certain amount (it depends on your personal circumstances as to how much – you can ask your Job Coach for exact figures by asking a question in your Journal) before you start losing some of your UC payment. When you reach that limit, you lose 63p off your UC for every £1 extra you’ve earned.
If you’re struggling to meet rent, you could also seek additional help from your local authority to receive a Discretionary Housing Payment that tops up the housing element of UC to help you meet your rent. I hope that helps!April 21, 2020 at 09:12 #150907EoinParticipant

When you start earning, remember that you could be eligible for a Help to Save account too – that’s up to £1200 FREE in bonuses from the Govt over 4 years. There’s a whole article about it here: https://www.moneymagpie.com/save-money/help-to-save-free-money
