New parents can get £500 cash, free nappies and baby boxes in the UK – here’s everything you can claim

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Having a baby is wonderful — but it’s also one of the biggest financial shocks most of us will ever experience.

From the moment you start buying nappies, wipes and tiny clothes that last about five minutes, the costs begin to mount. Yet what many new parents don’t realise is just how much help exists in the UK. There are cash grants, free baby boxes, nappies, food schemes and loyalty perks that can make a serious difference in that first year.

The key is knowing where to look — and applying early.

Here’s all the help for new parents available right now.

The £500 free payment new parents often miss

One of the biggest pieces of support available is the Sure Start Maternity Grant — a one-off payment of £500 that you don’t have to repay.

It’s designed to help with the cost of a new baby and can be spent on essentials like a pram, cot or washing machine.

You’ll usually qualify if you’re on Universal Credit or certain other benefits and:

  • This is your first child

  • Or you’re having multiple babies (twins etc)

You must apply from 11 weeks before your due date until three months after birth, and thousands of eligible parents miss out simply because they don’t realise they can claim.

Child Benefit: don’t forget this weekly payment

Almost all parents are entitled to Child Benefit, currently worth over £20 a week for your first child.

Even if one parent earns over the repayment threshold, it’s still often worth claiming because it protects National Insurance credits that count towards your state pension.

It only takes a few minutes to apply and can be backdated for three months.

Healthy Start: free food, formula and vitamins

If you’re pregnant or have a child under four and are on a lower income, the Healthy Start scheme is one of the most valuable things to check.

You’ll get a prepaid card topped up every four weeks to spend on:

  • Milk

  • Fruit and vegetables

  • Infant formula

  • Pulses

  • Vitamins

For many families this can be worth hundreds of pounds a year — yet it remains hugely underclaimed.

Even if you’re working, you may still qualify if you receive Universal Credit.

Free nappies, wipes and baby samples

Before you buy anything, sign up for the major baby clubs and free packs. Many parents build a decent starter stash just from samples.

You’ll typically receive nappies, wipes, creams and useful vouchers — ideal for those early weeks.

The M&S perk for parents most people don’t know

If you use the M&S Sparks loyalty app, there’s a hidden gem called Parent Hood.

This free club runs from pregnancy until your child turns two and can include:

  • 10% off baby clothing

  • Tailored Sparks rewards

  • Occasional free café treats during parent-and-baby visits

  • Extra offers and surprises

It’s free to join and worth activating even if you only shop there occasionally.

Free baby boxes and starter packs

Scotland’s free baby box

If you live in Scotland, every newborn receives a free Baby Box from the government.

Worth hundreds of pounds, it includes clothing, books, a mattress, bath items and practical essentials. It’s arranged via your midwife and is one of the most generous parenting schemes in the world.

Amazon baby welcome gift

Create an Amazon baby wishlist and complete the steps (usually adding items and making a small purchase) and you can receive a free welcome box with samples and baby items.

Supermarket and loyalty savings

Signing up to supermarket and pharmacy baby clubs early can mean regular discounts on nappies, wipes and formula.

Boots Parenting Club in particular offers:

  • Extra Advantage Card points

  • Targeted baby vouchers

  • Free gifts at certain stages

Stacking loyalty discounts with offers can cut ongoing costs significantly.

Local help many parents don’t realise exists

Some of the best support available is local — and often only discovered when families are struggling. But it’s there for anyone who needs it.

Baby banks

Many UK areas now have baby banks, providing free:

  • Clothing

  • Nappies

  • Prams and equipment

  • Toys

You can usually access them through a health visitor, midwife or family hub.

Family hubs and children’s centres

These can offer free:

  • Stay-and-play sessions

  • Feeding and sleep support

  • Baby weighing clinics

  • Parenting advice

  • Nearly-new sales

They’re also a great way to meet other parents without spending money.

Extra help if your income drops on maternity leave

A reduced income can mean you newly qualify for other support.

Check eligibility for:

  • Warm Home Discount (energy bills)

  • Household Support Fund from your council

  • Water bill social tariffs

These aren’t specifically for parents but can free up extra cash during that first year.

The bottom line

The cost of having a baby in the UK is high — but there is far more help available than many people realise.

From £500 government grants and free food support to nappies, baby packs and loyalty perks, taking time to sign up and apply could save you hundreds or even thousands in your baby’s first year.

The golden rule?

Apply for everything, even if you’re not sure you qualify.

Because when it comes to the cost of raising a baby, every freebie and payment really does make a difference.
